MA Fine Art

The Course

Committed to the ‘discrete’ objects of painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. The main objective of the course is to define, develop and refine individual practice.

The MA Fine Art Course at the School is concerned to attract artists with a strong commitment to the ‘discrete’ objects of painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. The course runs from September to September, twelve months for full time students and twenty four for part time students. Full-time students are housed in the art school, whereas part-time students are expected to have their own studios.

The course itself comprises two main areas of activity; Studio Practice and Critical Aesthetics.

The main objective of the course is to identify, develop and refine individual practice. Critical appraisal is concerned to identify 'critical models' appropriate to the work of each individual student. The objective of constructing each student's individual 'critical model' is developed within  studio-based discourse, through a wide range of tutors who are all exhibiting artists with considerable experience and expertise. Critical Aesthetics Seminars alongside studio discourse form the basis for the dissertation which is one of the two marked components of study. A body of studio based work  is seen as the major conclusion to the course and is exhibited both for examination and opened to the public at the end of the year. A series of Professional Practice Seminars delivered by artists, critics, gallerists and other art world professionals helps to construct a framework for professional practice beyond the educational establishment.

Initially students are housed for three terms in spacious studios in the Georgian Houses, however, during the fourth term on completion of the dissertation, they occupy the large BA studios on the ground floor for the summer term, giving them an experience of space that is second to none in the London Fine Art educational arena.
