Fine Art Painting

We encourage students to develop their own visual language - figurative, abstract or conceptual, and always to explore both the historical and contemporary contexts of their work.

In a recent letter to the Observer newspaper and Art Monthly by Graham Crowley (former Professor of the Royal College of Art) our Fine Art Department was singled out for its ‘magnificent job’ in ‘maintaining the transformative power and joy of education through art’.

BA (Hons) Fine Art - Painting

BA (Hons) Fine Art – Painting – three years full-time study leading to a BA(Hons) degree validated by the University of Central England, Birmingham.

Although painting and sculpture are offered as distinct pathways, students from each area are encouraged to explore the territory which is common to both. Painting is going through an exciting period in its development as evidenced by the increasingly fine quality of the work produced. Drawing in all its aspects, is seen as crucial for both thinking and creating within the Painting Department.

Post Graduate Diploma

The Post Graduate Diploma option is offered in two modes, two years part time or one year full time. It is often used as a bridge between BA and MA study and can, if space allows, incorporate elements of the BA project base.

MA Fine Art

The MA in Fine Art is aimed at individuals whose commitment is to the static objects of painting, sculpture, printmaking etc. It is essentially practice-based but recognises the importance of addressing the implications of contemporary critical context for more traditionally based forms. A primary part of its purpose will be to identify and extend each student's understanding of the 'critical model' seen both as inherent in their work however instinctive, and as the source of appropriate criteria for its critical appraisal.
