In November 2008, the second year students of the Conservation Department at City & Guilds of London Art School, supervised by Stone Conservation Tutor Eric Miller, and Head of Conservation Dr Marina Sokhan, carried out a condition report and a transport proposal of an early 17th century Bernini marble sculpture of St. Sebastian belonging to the Thyssen-Bornemisza family collections.

The statue was commissioned to Bernini by Cardinal Maffeo Barberini and remained with the family until 1935 when it was acquired by Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza. The reason for such condition assessment was a ten year loan of the sculpture to the Thyssen Museum in Madrid which started in September 2009. The students were thrilled about the opportunity of working on a such a unique sculpture and are grateful to the curator of the collection for having been granted this opportunity.
