Canova's Three Graces back at Clandon Park (National Trust)
The plaster model of the Three Graces by Antonio Canova (1757-1822) has returned to Clandon Park after an absence of seventeen years during which it was conserved by a series of students from City & Guild’s Art of London School’s conservation department.
The Three Graces were delivered to the Conservation Department in 1994 - in approximately 75 pieces, headless and with major cracks in the body of the cast and finally completed in June 2011. It was one of the longest and most difficult projects in the history of the department, involving remodelling and re-attaching a missing head to one of the Graces, remodelling the left hand and re-attaching the left arm. The final stage of the project that led to the completion of work took about 1,000 hours; it was supervised by two stone conservation tutors Eric Miller and Jennifer Dinsmore and student Kimberley Reczek completed the extensive project.
