Amy Gadney has been awarded the inaugural GAM MA Fine Art Prize
Amy receives £4,000 for her work at the MA graduating show and for her development and outstanding achievement during her MA year at the School.
Born in 1972, Amy Gadney completed a Foundation from St Martins School of Art in 1991 and graduated with a First Class BA Hons in Fine Art from UWE Bristol in 1994. She has been awarded the GAM Prize for Baby, a series of abstract paintings made from the body of a seven-ton transport lorry – a material full of incidental life that’s generally invisible to the world. The judging panel included art critic Marjorie Allthorpe-Guyton, artist and school alumnus Barnaby Hosking, art patron Stuart Evans, and Haunch of Venison Director Ben Tufnell. Together, the panel decided that the work showed a high degree of critical insight and cultural awareness. They especially commended levels of sophistication and subject focus in the work, rarely encountered at this stage in an artist’s career.
The Prize is just one element of GAM’s support of the School’s Fine Art Department. In addition GAM is providing bursary support and assistance for the Fine Art Department’s highly respected visiting lecturer programme. GAM is extremely supportive of the visual arts following the legacy of its founder, Gilbert de Botton, a visionary financier and well-known patron and leading collector of modern and contemporary art.
