Her current research explores the relation between art and nature moving from early depictions of landscape through to the epic ‘scapes’ of the Space Age, the latter drawn from art practice, scientific imaging and the genre of Science Fiction. These relations are read within the contemporary critical context of the convergence of artistic and scientific practice made apparent in the writing of Michel Serres, Katherine Hayles and Gilles Deleuze.
As a curator Rachel has worked on a range of contemporary art projects including commissions with Janet Cardiff, Mark Wallinger, Amy Plant, Mark Titchner, James Ireland, Lothar Goetz, Florain Balza, Simon Periton, and Rose Finn-Kelcey’s award-winning public art commission Angel (joint winner of ACE award 2007/2008). Likewise she has worked on a contemporary design commission with Tord Boontje and with Droog Design on their award-winning Airco Tree (winner, Dutch Design Awards, interior category, 2004).
Her writing, both critical and creative, has been published in print and web format and broadcast on national and local radio.
From 1993-1998 she set up and published ENGAGED, an experimental, cross-platform, contemporary art magazine described by Creative Review as ‘a magazine like no other and not even like itself’ (October 1995). ENGAGED is held in archives around the world and the magazine website is archived as part of Goldsmith’s Special Collection at http://eprints.gold.ac.uk/153.
