Laura Clarke graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2010 with a Distinction in MA Printmaking. She has been teaching etching at City & Guilds of London Art School since Autumn 2010, and was appointed to the position of Fellow at the Royal Academy in Autumn 2012. Her work is held in private collections in across the UK and she exhibits widely.
The theatrical imagery has erotic and fantastical overtones; surreal and ambiguous in their strangeness. Her current still imagery allows the viewer to think about the nature of the spectacle as much as its representation: a humerous but repulsing cast of dysfunctional transgender characters unlocking forbidden desires and fears and awakening childhood transgressions.
In her tableaux type films we find ourselves in a waking world, a world between real and fantasy, between being and becoming, innocence and experience. Occupying a middle ground between the states, poised on the threshold rich with longing.
Laura lives and works in South London with her two cats, Beaux and Moreau.
