I am fascinated by the transformation of objects and semblances into symbols and ultimately, language. The articulation of this space of transformation, both as the expression of a gap and the provision of a bridge to meaning, has been the focus of my research over the past year.
Fragments of the natural world are given a space where their vulnerability, beauty and value are given a voice; fragments that are ordinary in kind become extraordinary in degree. Similarly, elements of written language – words and calligraphic marks – are placed in unconventional contexts where the links to the phenomena that inspired their making are recalled.
I have been inspired by the work of the artists Prunella Clough, Agnes Martin, James Turrell, Giuseppe Penone and Roni Horn. The writers and critics who have been equally important to me are Walter Benjamin, Northrop Frye, Italo Calvino, Elaine Scarry and in particular, Giorgio Agamben.
