My intention is to make art that expresses the desire to introduce an image to a place where it does not belong naturally, and to examine thenature and relationship between imagery and its surroundings. I paint and draw natural and familiar images such as clouds, water and wooded areas. For me, it is our over-familiarity with these elements that makes the images of them so interesting. They remain emotionally loaded, yet very anonymous. This significant relationship between an image and its surroundings appears when both the imagery and its surroundings are placed in the pictorial space as a complete image.I paint these natural images within the confines of a small rectangle as if hanging them on a wall. The rectangle is also an open window in which to view a landscape.The image that I create within the rectangle generates a delicate contradiction with the rest of the pictorial space. Through this paradox, my aim is to create a new level of complexity between the subject of the painting and the pictorial space around it, highlighting a reality that is only possible within the language of painting.
