I collect images from various sources such as films, documentaries and the internet. I am intrigued with photographs of abandoned places, wastelands and crime scenes and feel that the ambiguity and banality which I see in them, is a potential for painting. When these elements are taken to painting they are drawn into a battle between the ordinariness of what is being depicted and the monumentality of what may have occurred there. The painting moves through a series of process; attempts to open the work up to further possibilities which will bring me closer to the tension and discomfort I hope to achieve.
I am particularly interested in horror films and the devices employed by the genres directors. Camera angles, the films score and the non linear use of time are exploited to create a heightened sense of suspense. I feel that these elements can be taken to paint and transformed as a sense, which can operate as something like anxiety or discomfort.
Recently I have become engaged in uniting idea with technique; that is to say that the application of the material substance of paint, together with the image, articulate a sense of unease without either one taking precedence.
