I am interested in the moments in life when there is a disturbing realisation of the link between the physical reality of things and your own internal life. My works are designed to point out and intensify these moments. Slavoj Zizek asserts that we need the reality of fiction to stage the truth; I see my works as a dramatic reworking of reality.I begin to formulate my works by capturing snapshots of visual moments that I encounter. I want them to encapsulate the personal experience of the subversion of a domestic environment, so I look for moments in which the mundane has been intersected by something that is slightly unsettling but plausible within common experience. That the viewer can associate with the subject is important to me, I need the works to be able to catch the viewers attention so that a poetic communication of experience can be shared.I closely crop the images to create an intimacy between the subject and the viewer, as if their attention has been gripped by something out of the ordinary. I am interested in everyday occurrences that provoke the feeling that something disturbing from within the self has been echoed in the material world, and want my images to alert viewers to a specific reaction to a moment. I am interested in Freud’s feeling of the uncanny, but more specifically I enjoy subjects which are beautiful yet also disgusting, or which illicit a feeling of sympathy as well as repulsion. This is achieved through several mediums, paint, photography and film, and the relationship between works. By using subjects which are familiar and domestic, I hope the viewer will be struck by the images and how they speak to them. In the paintings I use the medium to heighten colours and to give physicality to the images. This expands the illusion of reality, and confuses the relationship between the paintings and photographs. This I hope will free the viewer from thinking about looking at art, and allow them to have a gut reaction.
