Whether my work is abstract or representional my starting point is always observation; sometimes I use sketches and photographs, at others I extend reality with memory and imagination. I seem to create series naturally, starting with representational versions and progressing to the abstract.
For this show I have chosen landscapes from around London. Surprisingly perhaps this is true even of the abstracts which are based on the pond shown in the etching "Pond" (Nos. 3 and 4) but viewed from the opposite direction. I have used the original scene to create the structure of the new works.
I enjoy exploring the representation of different light and atmospheric effects: dawn as in the etching titled "Roofs"; reflections as in "Pond" and dark and light as in my oil painting "Fireworks". Light naturally entails colour which I have explored particularly in the abstract paintings. Another recurring theme in my work is the use of devices which position the viewer, such as fences and barriers and the back views of figures.
Some of the etchings introduce an eerie, gloomy or magical atmosphere, but generally my work has a positive emotional tone.
