For the second consecutive year, the Art School is taking part in the Big Draw Festival,  an initiative run by The Big Draw, a visual literacy charity that promotes the universal language of drawing as a tool for learning, expression and invention. This year’s theme is ‘Wellbeing and Creativity’ and as part of the festival,  Fine Art Tutor and Artist Jane Hayes Greenwood will run ‘The Power of Plants’, a charcoal drawing workshop focusing on the benefits of creativity and nature. Taking place on Saturday 26 October, 10-1pm, anyone interested in attending is encouraged to purchase a ticket (£5) via Eventbrite as soon as possible as places are limited.

The Art School is inviting participants to bring along their favourite house plant, take some time out to focus on the patterns and forms in nature and learn how to draw with charcoal.

Even a brief amount of time spent on a creative pastime has powerful benefits for personal wellbeing, according to new research commissioned by BBC Arts. An online survey of almost 50,000 people across the UK found that taking part in creative activities helps people manage stress, face up to challenges and explore solutions to problems in their lives.

And according to the Royal Horticultural Society, ‘Indoor plants offer two main groups of benefits for us: improved psychological (mental) well-being and physical human health (i.e. it supports fitness and general health).’

The psychological benefits of indoor plants have been shown to include improved mood, reduced stress, increased productivity and attention span. The physical health benefits include better air quality, reduced blood pressure and fatigue.

In the 2018 Big Draw Festival, the Art School ran a Big Circle Draw class, a traditional drawing class with a twist! Led by Fine Art Tutor and artist, Jack Southern, a group of Art School students and alumni sat in a large circle. With a continuing series of short exercises, each artist took it in turn to play model and every drawing produced by the circle was captured digitally to form an animation that grew as the afternoon continued.

Anyone interested in taking part in ‘The Power of Plants’ can book their place via Eventbrite. Places are limited, so quick booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. All levels of experience welcome, suitable for those aged 18+.
