CARVING DEPARTMENT: LEAD TUTOR STONECARVING (0.4 FTE, one-year fixed term)
City & Guilds of London Art School is a small-scale, independent Higher Education provider and charity, well respected for its specialist undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Fine Art, Carving (Stone and Wood) and Conservation and its intensive Foundation Diploma in Art & Design. It comprises 40 students in the Carving Department and approximately 14 members of part time staff. City & Guilds of London Art School offers the only undergraduate and postgraduate level courses in Carving in the UK and our graduates go on to work on major heritage projects in cathedrals, historic houses and museums as well as contemporary and historical commissions.
The Carving Department is in a moment of significant change as it negotiates its own historic origins, but also sees its potential as a dynamic, contemporary medium. We are seeking to appoint an experienced professional Stonecarver and educator to join the carving team to co-ordinate and develop the Stone Carving pathway of the undergraduate course and to teach across both BA and MA. This post is being advertised to cover a current member of staff’s leave of absence.
Ideally you will have experience of working within or running a commercial Stone Carving workshop with a varied workload, in particular tackling different historical styles and periods. We also welcome applications from carvers who use their skills, historical knowledge and techniques to produce contemporary work.
You will need to be a good communicator, enthusiastic about teaching and developing the direction of the pathway, keen to pass on your knowledge and skills, and willing to instruct from first principles through to an advanced level. Experience of teaching at Higher Education level, a practical and pro-active attitude, and an ability to develop new project material, facilitate networking and enable commissions are essential.
