JOB VACANCY: WOODCARVING TUTOR (Historic Carving Department)

City & Guilds of London Art School has an unbroken tradition of teaching sculpture, wood and stone carving since it was founded in 1879. We play a crucial role in keeping alive the skills essential for preserving the world’s most important monuments and buildings, and are proud to offer the UK’s only undergraduate and postgraduate courses in carving.

In 2019/20 we will be re-launching our longstanding and successful 3 year diploma and 1 year PgDip carving courses as BA (Hons) Historic Carving: Architectural Stone; BA (Hons) Historic Carving: Woodcarving & Gilding; PgDip Carving and MA Carving. For more information please visit:

We are now seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional Woodcarver to join the Historic Carving team and work alongside our master carvers to teach carving practice up to 1 day per week during term time (30 weeks a year).

Ideally you will have experience of working within or running a commercial carving workshop with a varied workload, in particular tackling different historical styles and periods.

You will need to be a good communicator, able to convey your knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject and willing to instruct from first principles through to an advanced level. A practical and pro-active attitude, and a willingness to show initiative in the development of new project material would also be essential attributes.
