COURSE OVERVIEW

An introduction to woodcarving will offer you the opportunity to learn the fundamental approaches to traditional woodcarving in one of the few art schools that still teaches it. Ideal for beginners/intermediate carvers, we will introduce you to specific skills and techniques needed to produce a wood carving, how to work with wood and grain, and how to sharpen chisels safely. This is an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself into a creative hands-on project and learn a bit more about this wonderful craft.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

We will begin the course with a brief introduction to the history of decorative ornament. You will then have the choice to use an existing cast of a small traditional ornamental piece from our extensive archive or if you are feeling more ambitious, to design and create a piece of your own. The main stages we will cover will include drawing and transferring a design to wood, modelling a design in clay, and carving a design into a wood that is suitable for your project.

The projects will be small to medium size and carved in relief which stands out from the surface, rather than being set in. They will need to be fairly simple/moderate in complexity in order to allow you to gain the most out of your experience and hopefully complete your piece within the term time. You will leave the course with knowledge of how to approach and execute your own simple carving project at home.

What’s included: all teaching, and your tools and materials for the woodcarving.

What you will need to bring: a steel tape measure, an A3 sketchbook, pencil, rubber and ruler. Please bring along any set squares or clay modelling tools you may have. Please wear old clothes you don’t mind spoiling, or bring an apron, and wear fully closed shoes at all times.

15% discount available for City & Guilds of London Art School students, alumni and staff. Contact eveningcourses@cityandguildsartschool.ac.uk to receive the discount code.
