WHY CHOOSE US FOR YOUR FOUNDATION COURSE?

Foundation at the Art School introduces you to a wide range of creative subjects, with the time, space and expert teaching you need to experiment and evolve your ideas and your conceptual and practical skills.

Unlike most other Foundation courses, we are able to tailor the course to your specific interests by giving you much greater tutorial time than you will find elsewhere and providing a motivating and supportive studio environment where you will be allocated your own designated studio space throughout the week rather than finding you need to share.

Following carefully structured projects and taught workshops, you will be supported to progressively take greater control of your own learning and identify your own specialist direction.  The Foundation Show at the end of the year demonstrates an extraordinary range of directions and outputs by our hugely creative students.

As a Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, validated by the University of the Arts London Awarding Body, our course has more advanced expected learning outcomes than many Foundation programmes. Level 4 is the level at which first-year undergraduate courses are assessed and the expectations on our course align with this.

By enrolling on our Foundation Diploma, you will be joining a progressive, supportive and creative learning community within a wider art school. Our teaching staff comprises professional artists and designers who possess a broad knowledge of material processes and the production of images, objects, events, fashion, video and performance through hands-on experience.  Students are guided through an immersive creative journey and are fully supported in their decisions about, and applications for, progression to subsequent career and study routes.

The course:

> supports the development of a personal creative practice with access to individual working space on 5 days per week, unlike many of our competitors

> encourages and enables students to access the Art School’s wide range of workshop facilities and support staff, such as wood, metal, glass, print, casting, digital media and life drawing

> supports students through daily teaching which synthesises academic, technical and critical learning

> promotes a deep understanding of materiality through process

> negotiates the role of the artist and designer, both as individual and as part of a shared community

> acknowledges the urgency of responsible and ethical practice in the face of an environmental/global emergency

> welcomes the call to decolonise our institutions and is committed to recognising and incorporating global dialogues around creative subjects

> encourages new modes of representation

> supports the production of an ambitious public exhibition.

ART FOUNDATION AND NEXT STEPS

There are many fulfilling and exciting careers in art and design, and our fast-paced and intensive art Foundation course offers a focused, inspiring and memorable year which will thoroughly prepare you for further study or professional practice.

The completion of a Foundation Course is a prerequisite for most Art & Design degree courses in the UK.  Our aim is to go further than simply help you prepare for an interview – we set out to help you develop the skills you need to go on to be leading artists and designers of the future. Whether you intend to make an application for a BA course in a specialist subject, explore a personal interest or take the first step on a career, with this course you will be making an important investment in your future.

We acknowledge that offering a premium course comes at a premium price and that our fees reflect this, but the Art School as a whole is dedicated to playing a positive role in the world by widening access to creativity through our generous bursary scheme.
