We are very excited to announce that Phase 2 of our Art School Masterplan has been shortlisted for the ‘Heritage Project of the Year’ category in the AJ Architecture Awards 2018.

The award judges visited the City & Guilds of London Art School to experience the scale of the build for themselves and to gain a full appreciation of the benefits of the development to the whole Art School community. The winners will be announced in December 2018 and we are, of course, hoping to be one of them!

Phase 2 is the second part of the Masterplan which was set in place in 2008 under the direction of Alan Higgs Architects, to develop and enhance the Art Schools’ studios and facilities.

This second part of the development focused on the creation of the impressive glass entrance and atrium that greets students and visitors when they come to the Art School. The new contemporary entranceway compliments the historic Georgian and Victorian buildings of the School and allows students and staff to move between the two buildings with ease. It also provides a large and inviting space which enhances our public events.

In addition to this, the outdoor area and garden were re-landscaped and enhanced. The final part of this phase is currently under construction, and will see a substantial upgrade of our stone carving studios and includes a new woodcarving studio and specialist working spaces.

Alan Higgs Architects has worked closely with the Heads of Department and specialist tutors throughout these developments and has been sensitive to the special atmosphere of our buildings where focused creativity has been at work for many decades.

The Masterplan is the responsibility of the City & Guilds of London Art School Property Trust, an independent charity acting as the landlord of the Art School under long-term lease arrangements. All Masterplan developments since 2010 have been funded entirely by the donations from Trusts, Foundations and individuals. We would like to thank them for their most generous support which has allowed these transformative changes.
