Develop an ambitious, independent art practice through experimentation, critical enquiry and sustained studio research.
The MA Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School is an intensive, practice-led postgraduate course designed to challenge and expand your artistic practice. Through experimentation, critical research and sustained studio work, you’ll develop a distinctive artistic direction and a deeper understanding of the ideas, materials and contexts that inform your work.
Whether you’re progressing from undergraduate study or returning to education after working independently or professionally, you’ll join a supportive and critically engaged community of artists. You’ll be encouraged to question established approaches, take creative risks and explore new ways of thinking and making, supported by practising artists, researchers and specialist tutors.
Studio practice is at the heart of the course, supported by individual tutorials, group critiques, seminars and workshops. Research and critical reflection are integrated throughout, helping you articulate your ideas and position your work within contemporary art and visual culture.
The course progresses through three units — Methods, Practices and Professions — taking you from experimentation and research through the development and public presentation of a resolved body of work, followed by critical reflection and professional development.
You’ll present your work in the Art School’s MA Show and participate in a final Critical Practice Event, sharing your practice and research with audiences beyond the studio.
As part of the Graduate School, you’ll also have opportunities to exchange ideas with postgraduate students across Carving and Conservation.
Duration: One year full-time or two years part-time.
Award: Master of Arts (MA), validated by Arts University Bournemouth.
