We are deeply saddened by the passing of former trustee, tutor and master letter carver Richard Kindersley. Richard was a renowned carver, designer, sculptor and mentor whose influence shaped generations of lettering artists and carvers.
His work included major public commissions, including the lettering for Holford’s New London Bridge (1973), a memorial tablet for Westminster Abbey (1986), the lettering for the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge (1991), a coat of arms for Liverpool Crown Court (2000) and a memorial for St Paul’s Cathedral (2009).
Richard designed the lettering for three significant national memorials, the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire (2007), The Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park (2012) and the British Normandy Memorial, which commemorates the D-Day landings (2021).
A visiting lecturer and trustee at City & Guilds of London Art School, Richard led annual study trips to Rome, Pompeii and Naples until 2014, generously sharing his deep knowledge of Republican, Imperial and Renaissance inscriptions with students and lettering enthusiasts.
His practice extended across concrete, brick, forged and laser-cut steel, plaster and freestanding sculptural forms, encompassing both monumental public works and carved texts and memorials.
His legacy lives on through his work and the many carvers he inspired through his teaching.
