Role Description
The Tutor in Stone Conservation is a part-time, on-site role based in London, responsible for teaching and mentoring learners in the principles and practice of stone conservation. Day-to-day, the tutor plans and delivers lectures and practical workshops covering stone materials, deterioration mechanisms, conservation ethics, and treatment methodologies. The role includes supervising studio-based projects, demonstrating hands-on techniques, guiding learners in documentation and condition assessment, and overseeing the safe use of tools, equipment, and materials. The tutor provides regular feedback on learners’ work, participates in assessment and moderation processes, and contributes to curriculum development to keep teaching aligned with current professional standards. Additional responsibilities may include liaising with external partners on live conservation projects, supporting outreach and recruitment activities, and engaging in their own continuing professional development and research.
Qualifications
- Professional expertise in stone conservation, including knowledge of stone types, deterioration processes, and conservation methodologies.
- Experience with practical conservation techniques such as cleaning, consolidation, repair, and preventive conservation for stone objects and architectural features.
- Background in heritage, conservation, or related fields, ideally with experience working on historic buildings, monuments, or museum collections.
- Strong teaching, mentoring, or training skills, with the ability to support learners at different levels and foster an inclusive learning environment.
- Competence in documentation and research, including condition reporting, technical analysis, and familiarity with relevant conservation standards and guidelines.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and engage with external partners.
- Commitment to ethical conservation practice, health and safety, and continuous professional development.
- Relevant degree or recognized qualification in conservation or heritage science, or a closely related discipline; professional accreditation or membership in a conservation body is an advantage.
