BA (Hons) Carving: Woodcarving & Gilding

The City & Guilds of London Art School has a very long and deep history of teaching ornamental woodcarving and gilding, with our students and graduates receiving many accolades, prizes and commissions.

The Woodcarving & Gilding Pathway of  BA (Hons) Carving  is a comprehensive, three-year course that will prepare you for a fulfilling career in architectural heritage as a professional woodcarver or sculptor.

Whether your ambition is to create new work in historic contexts or to restore sculpture and ornament, your aesthetic and historical knowledge will be as important as your woodcarving skills. On this carving course, you’ll develop a wide range of enhanced skills and will graduate fully equipped to begin a successful career in carving.

This course is validated by our educational partner Ravensbourne University London.

From September 2024, this course will be validated by Arts University Bournemouth.

We offer a great range of grants and bursaries to students studying on our woodcarving and gilding degree course. Bursaries vary in size but typically fund around 30 to 50% of the course fees and are awarded on the basis of need – find out more or contact

The two-year Diploma of Higher Education Carving: Woodcarving & Gilding, covers the same specialist syllabus as the first two years of the BA (Hons) programme.
