New Miniature Portraits for Westminster Abbey

Two second-year Post-Graduate Diploma students, James Kirby and John Ford, are involved in an interesting project at Westminster Abbey.

Whilst carrying out summer work at the Abbey for Nimbus Conservation, they were invited to work on two new portrait carvings (called label stops or head-stops) and located on the Chapter House.

The idea is to replace the original portraits with their contemporary equivalents, working within a medieval style while capturing their contemporary subjects. John is working on a portrait of Mr. Jim Vincent, current Head of Works at the Abbey while James is carving a portrait of Professor Warwick Rodwell, a Consultant Archaeologist. John and James first created clay models, working mainly from photographs and a brief sitting. Once approved they cut and fitted the blocks of Chilmark limestone (from Wiltshire) in situ before bringing these blocks to the Art School to begin the carving. It is hoped that the completed work will be fitted before the end of 2009. In the near future, 40 of these miniature portraits will be replaced by a number of carvers including one by Ivan Cudby, a tutor at City & Guilds of London Art School.
