‘Baby’ is a series of abstract paintings made from the body of a seven-ton transport lorry – a material full of incidental life that’s generally invisible to the world. In the studio the unfamiliar surfaces assume a visibility that’s still obscure, but the context of painting allows this obscurity to be explicit. By combining the strange kind of frequency that the material emits with the mechanics of painting, I hope to bring out the life of the surface and make room for an unlikely sense of ‘being-in-the-world’ to be born.
