I make drawings that bring together various ways of seeing. The animals are hybrids of children’s drawings with my own life room training and anatomical studies. The children’s drawings that I commission act as a template for the animal. I enlarge this and push into its outline my understanding of that animal’s structure- an understanding gathered from direct experience, anatomy drawings and photographs. The children’s outlines are maintained as rigorously as possible and so become a filter through which the creature must be distorted and seen in a new way.
This work is driven by a discovery of ate 16th century natural history drawings. Made just before the beginning of the Enlightenment and science as we know it now, these odd animal images are fusions of a vast pool of both visual sources and systems of morality and faith. Through this work I aim to examine ways of seeing today. By forcing together different types of perception the logic and eccentricities of each become clearer.
