I am interested in the traces that people leave in the environments where they live and work. In my pieces, these traces are revealed in the form of marks that are ‘recorded’ on zinc plates that were prepared with soft ground wax, and then etched with acid to render these marks permanent. The plates- and the prints made from them- are combined in these works.

I left the pre-prepared plates on everyday objects with flat surfaces, such as tables and chairs and the horizontal steps of a staircase. Traces of human activity and presence accrued on the plates as time went on. The finished work has been made with the involvement of humans (and in one instance, birds) and can be seen as having arisen from a process of interaction. They also contain an element of mystery as the traces have been made by unnamed, unidentified beings.

My intention is that when viewers examine the plates and the prints made from them that they see the work as offering a record of the to-and-fro of daily life. My hope is that the works reveal the very essence of action in life itself and touch on the remarkable hidden within the ordinary.

During the process of developing and making this work I have been inspired by the work of the following artists: John Cage, Lucy Skaer, Rachel Whiteread, Donald Judd, the Boyle Family, Do Ho Suh and Carl Andre.
